Add Energy to the Boring

When I asked a friend how he beat the competition as a small player in a couple of businesses re-selling fairly mundane products his answer surprised and impressed me. He responded enthusiastically that his secret is to “add energy to the boring.” That energy comes from him, and his positivity and enthusiasm are keys to his success.

As an entrepreneur he understands that he is the business and how he presents himself is how clients see his businesses. Not only does he bring high energy and positivity to the table, he also focuses on solving problems rather than simply selling his products. Taking that approach puts the potential client first – something “salespeople” don’t do as they are focused on selling their products or services – and getting their commission - whether or not they are what will help the client.

I utilized the problem-solving approach during my stint selling extruder screws to plastics and food manufacturing plants. It doesn’t get much more boring than that product, though seeing the applications was pretty cool. My interest in the manufacturing processes enabled me to add energy to my sales calls, and my focus on solving problems got me more appointments and resulted in higher value sales - and loyal clients.

A friend paid me a great compliment when he told me, “You’re not a salesman, you sell things.” Until he said that I hadn’t thought about the difference between a problem-solver and a salesperson. Taking the problem-solving approach came naturally to me, as it does with my friend. Putting the client first – ahead of sales commissions, quotas, etc. – may not produce immediate gains, but it builds long term relationships that more than make up for that over the long haul. That approach also makes repeat sales easier as clients trust that you’re there to help them – no sales pitch needed at that point, they call you.

Whether you are in sales, slogging through routine tasks at work or home, or just bored with your day-to-day activities, adding positive energy will make things go more smoothly and get you out of a rut. While my friend’s comment pertained to his recipe for business success, it provides good advice for many aspects of daily life. The next time you find yourself groaning about a boring task, think about how adding positive energy can make it better.
